In an interview last year with Rod Berger at Eagle FC, former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov sat down to discuss life after retirement from the sport. Khabib announced his retirement from MMA after his second successful title defense against Justin Gaethje in 2020.
Since then, Khabib has started his own fighting promotion called Eagle FC and had coaching his teammate and childhood friend, Islam Makhachev for his championship run. At UFC 280 last October, Islam Makhachev, mentored by Khabib and coach Javier Mendez defeated Charles Oliveira to become the UFC lightweight champion.
Khabib Nurmagomedov has retired from coaching since and wishes to continue living in his hometown of Dagestan. The undefeated world champion has many accolades to his name including two times World Combat Sambo Wrestling championship. In the interview, Khabib discussed how he has kept himself busy since retirement.
“Honestly, I always want to go back to my country. I lived in a village, I still live in a village. I have a house there. I have a gym, horses, big land, a small company where I sell vegetables...not really,” Khabib hilariously told Rod. “But I remember when we were 8-9 years old, we used to have a farm and we would sell tomatoes,” the Dagestani champion continued.
UFC’s updated pound-for-pound rankings have disappointed Islam Makhachev
After his successful title defense against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 285, Islam Makhachev was accused of cheating by UFC featherweight, Dan Hooker. Despite the victory over the P4P #1 fighter, Makhachev was not promoted to the #1 spot by the UFC.
In a closely contested battle with Volkanovski, Makhachev came out of the octagon victorious with over six minutes in ground control. UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski was challenged by Islam to a fight at lightweight for the P4P spot.
“I never expected justice and still don’t. We have always seen the attitude towards us in the example of other fighters, Ankalaev, and Petr Yan. The main thing is I flew 13,000 kilometers and defeated their champion there. The referee raised my hand up. With my head up, confident, with a belt, I came home,” Makhachev told in an interview.
The accusations put forth by Dan Hooker were also responded to by the Dagestani champion over Twitter. Since then, the Combat Sports Commission of Australia has also refused to carry out any investigation without any admissible evidence of cheating against Islam Makhachev.
