WWE stopped by Albany for SmackDown this week just 24 hours before a Madison Square Garden-sized edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event. Gunther kicked off the broadcast on Friday and blamed Nick Aldis as the only person holding him back from being a world champion. ‘The Ring General’ also slammed Aldis for putting him in a tag team match along with Sami Zayn, whom he referred to as a “bum.”

The acting SmackDown GM, Adam Pearce, quickly interrupted Gunther and reprimanded him for putting his hands on Aldis. Pearce told the Austrian he was lucky he didn’t get fired over his actions and should thank Aldis for that because if it were up to him, he would’ve made sure that Gunther got the sack. The Raw general manager eventually informed Gunther about the stipulation for his tag team match against CM Punk and Cody Rhodes.

It came from Nick Aldis, and while Pearce thought Gunther didn’t deserve it, the former 5-time NWA World Champion revealed that both Gunther and Sami Zayn would be added to the WWE title match between Punk and Rhodes at SummerSlam to make it a Fatal-4-Way should they beat the babyfaces at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

‘The Ring General’ had a pretty hearty laugh about that and then entered Cody Rhodes, who made a beeline for the Vienna-born wrestler and rained down a few punches, forcing the erstwhile Walter to retreat. Rhodes got a little payback for Gunther costing him the opportunity to wrestle Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship on Raw in Chicago. He then challenged the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion for a match in the main event of SmackDown, which was made official.

Rhodes had a backstage segment with CM Punk later on in which the ‘Best in the World’ assured to have the QB1’s back out there. Rhodes wasn’t too high on the idea, and he instead asked Punk to stay back. ‘The Second City Saint’, however, did arrive at ringside while Gunther was putting a beating on Rhodes in their scheduled match. In the closing moments, a returning Sami Zayn ambushed Punk, which led to Rhodes hitting a suicide dive on Zayn.

‘The Last Real Good Guy’ consequently attacked ‘The American Nightmare’, causing a DQ finish to Gunther vs. Rhodes. The chaos at ringside escalated in all four men engaging in an all-out brawl and swinging at anything that moved. Several WWE personnel came to separate them but couldn’t quite contain these belligerents who’ll get to fight in an official capacity at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

How is the final card for WWE SNME at MSG looking like?

Outside of the aforementioned tag team showdown, Roman Reigns will link up with Jalen Brunson to light up MSG at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Not much is known in terms of what will go down when they meet. However, given Reigns sustained an assault at the hands of his SummerSlam opponent Seth Rollins this past Monday night on Raw, the fans could expect Rollins to be there tonight as well.

‘The Visionary’ is gunning to regain the world title that he didn’t lose, and he has to do it against someone he’s known for the longest in his career. In the only championship match announced for the show, Paige and Brie Bella will defend their WWE women’s tag team titles against Lainey Reid and Fallon Henley of the Fatal Influence. Also, after turning on Bayley a few weeks ago, Lyra Valkyria went off on ‘The Role Model’ on the most recent edition of Raw.

‘The Bird Lady’ dissed Bayley as the worst of the Four Horsewomen and claimed she held her opponents down no matter whom she worked with. Valkyria will need to put her money where her mouth is when she takes on Bayley at the world’s most famous arena. Last, but certainly not least, Danhausen has JD McDonagh on his plate in a No Disqualification match. The fans should expect a ton of shenanigans in this one.
