Factions are easily the best part of WWE, maybe even the best part about professional wrestling. In most cases, factions are bad guys or heels. Factions can serve as training grounds, like a means to train young budding talent by a veteran. In some cases, they serve as a platform to elevate those involved.
There have been quite a lot of factions in WWE over time many legendary ones too like the Fabulous Freebirds and there have been some bad ones like 3MB. There were also stables with potential but didn’t get too far like the League of Nations. Here is a list of 15 of the most elite factions in WWE.
Here are some of the best factions that have dominated the world of WWE over the years.
The group debuted in NXT as a trio in 2017. The stable consisted of Kyle O Reilly, Bobby Fish and Adam Cole. Rodrick Strong would later align himself with the faction. At one point undisputed era held all the titles in NXT. Cole was NXT champion, Strong was North American champion and Fish and O Reilly held tag team gold.
During their time in NXT, the faction was running the show. Individually all 4 were established stars in the indie. Put together they were well oiled wrestling machine. They elevated the entire NXT roster, anyone involved in a storyline with them were destined to be great. Of the 4 members only Strong is currently in the company.
2)The New Day
Kofi Kingston has been in WWE since 2008, by 2014 he’d accumulated multiple tag team championships, 4 IC championships and 3 US championships. So most people would naturally assume that Kofi would have been a credible star with great opportunities. But that wasn’t the case. Big E by the same time was a former NXT champion and a credible IC championship reign. But he was stuck in the same rut as Kofi. Then comes Xavier Woods had just signed over from TNA but creative had nothing for him.
Frustrated the trio banded together to form the New Day in 2014. They quickly became fan favorites to the point where they’ve become tag team champions 12 times. Kofi became WWE champion at WrestleMania and so did Big E years later. Woods is the current holder of the King Of The Ring. Currently Big E is out due to a nasty neck injury and Kofi is out too.
Perhaps the group that set the ball rolling for heel stables. The horsemen serve as a template to what a faction should be. The group consisted of Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson and Tully Blanchard. They really defined the era with their heel tactics as a faction. Aside from the heel tactics they were amongst the best technicians in the ring.
Perhaps the biggest risk WWE took was to put 3 unknown faces together in a faction and push them to be the future of the business. That’s how the Shield happened. 3 talents from NXT; Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley) and Roman Reigns were put together to form the hounds of justice. A decade later these 3 are the biggest stars in the industry right now. As a unit the Shield started of as heels but garnered a lot of crowd support real quick and were turned face.
In the early 2000s Triple H formed the Evolution. The group personified evolution. Ric Flair from the past, Triple H the present, Batista and Randy Orton the future. The faction helped nurture both Batista and Orton to make it for themselves once the faction broke up. When the band got together again in 2014 they helped establish Shield as future stars.
With AEW showing up WWE really needed something to give it the edge. That was the Bloodline. Roman Reigns turning heel was exactly what he needed and he helped elevate his cousins the Usos when he formed the Bloodline, especially Jey Uso. The whole Bloodline Sami Zayn storyline was the best thing in the company over the past year. Currently they’re building a star in Solo Sikoa.
7)The Ministry of Darkness
During the Attitude Era Undertaker took on a more satanic, the lord of darkness sort of thing. He realigned with Paul Bearer and formed The Ministry of Darkness. During most of his time with the ministry Taker took on a managerial sort of position as he was recuperating from a fracture. The ministry was this Dark cult that was into sacrifices and witchcraft. Perhaps the highlight of the Ministry was the Black Wedding segment. Then there was the segment where they hung Bossman.
The Brood( Gangrel, Edge and Christian) debuted as part of the Ministry and the Acolytes(APA) became relevant after their stint with the Ministry.
The faction founded by Faarooq had multiple members in its time in the company. Perhaps it is best remembered for acting as a catalyst to ignite the career of a certain Rocky Maivia. Who of course went on to become the biggest star not just in the company but also in Hollywood The Rock.
The group at its peak consisted of The Rock, Faarooq, Kama Mustafa and D’Lo Brown.
Perhaps the newest members on this list. Judgement Day was created by Edge in 2022. He 1st recruited Damian Priest who had just lost his US championship. Next to join the wagon was Rhea Ripley who turned on her partner Liv Morgan. After successfully beating AJ Styles, Fin Balor and Liv Morgan in a 6 person tag match they added Fin Balor to the roster. But in a sudden turn of events they turned on Edge and laid him out with a con chair to.
Currently the stable consists of Ripley, Balor, Priest and Dominik Mysterio. Being part of this faction has helped these 4 elevate themselves especially Dominik and Rhea. Dominik has improved his mic work after joining the Judgement Day. Rhea went on to win the Royal Rumble and is the current SD Women’s champion.
The Vince McMahon Stone Cold storyline was stuff of legend. It helped certify Stone Cold as one of the biggest stars in Pro Wrestling. For all his talents however McMahon had no training as a Wrestler. So he created the Corporation. The stable consisted of the Bossman, Test, Ken Shemrock, Triple H and The Rock. The Big Show would later debut as a stable member and Kane would later align himself with it too.
The Corporation, in many ways, helped the careers of Stone Cold, Triple H, and The Rock to establish themselves in their characters.
What happened with the Nexus is basically the company not knowing what to do with a really good product. Also playing it to the ego of a certain John Cena. There hasn’t been a more impactful debut than that of the Nexus. A bunch of rookies from NXT led by the winner of the season Wade Barrett laid siege to the ring and destroyed absolutely everything and everyone. Including the ring itself.
The group served as a starting point for the likes of Ryback, Curtis Axel, David Otunga, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater and 2 other members who went onto become world champions in Daniel Bryan and Bray Wyatt.
Speaking of Bray Wyatt. Another faction that didn’t get its credit due to lousy creative and of course John Cena was the Wyatt Family. The original group consisted of Bray Wyatt, Eric Rowan and the late Brodie Lee who went by the name Luke Harper. It was a gimmick that was unique from the rest. With the elements of supernatural involved.
A lot of potentially great feuds were teased for the Wyatt Family like a rivalry with the Shield but nothing materialized. They have won their share of the accolades , tag championships and Wyatt winning the WWE championship. But the group wasn’t provided creative freedom. The stable helped establish Braun Strowman as a legitimate monster before his solo run.
13)The New World Order
The gang that single handedly triggered the Monday Night Wars. The sudden appearance of Kevin Nash and Scott Hall in WCW as a rogue entities changed the world of Pro Wrestling forever. Then with the unexpected heel turn of Hulk Hogan, absolutely no one saw that coming.
The nWo helped prolong the careers of veterans, which in the long run hurt WCW as it didn’t establish any new stars. But when everything’s said and done Hogan, Nash and Hall will forever be remembered as members of one of the greatest factions of all time.
14)D Generation X
Granted DX never won the Monday Night Wars but they did play a huge role in ushering the Attitude Era. The humor and the digs taken at the company. They were heels for most part but they were so over with fans that they were turned face.
The group initially consisted of Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Chyna and Rick Rude. But the best variant was when it consisted of X-Pac and the New Age Outlaws along with Triple H and Chyna. The latter reunions could not generate the magic of the OG DX.
The hart foundation came into existence after Bret Hart’s heel turn. The 5 member squad of Bret, Owen, Jim Neidhart, British Bulldog and Brian Pillman drew the most amazing heat in USA but loved the World over.
The group was part of the best storylines in WWF in 97. They had great feuds with the likes of Austin and Shawn Michaels. The faction won all the gold in the company. The group disbanded after the Screwjob.
