Darren Kenneth Matthews is a retired-professional wrestler known for his time in WWE where he was signed under the name William Regal. Matthews has been praised for both his time in-ring as well as for his on-screen managerial and authority roles. Until now, he was signed with AEW before making his exit soon.
Matthews started his career as early as 15 years of age. He began wrestling for national promotions like UK wrestling circuit and also wrestled on television at ITV (now known as Channel 3) and even went on a wrestling tour around the world until 1993 when he was signed by WCW as Steven Regal.
He then went to WWF/WWE in 1998 for a brief period of time before returning to WCW in 1999. But Regal soon rejoined WWE in 2001. His name in the company was soon changed to Steven William Regal and then finally shortened to William Regal. During his run in the company Regal has gone on to win 15 championships.
William Regal has won Intercontinental Championship twice, Hardcore Championship (5 times), European Championship (4 times), Tag Team Championships (4-times) and has also won a King of The Ring tournament as well. Regal also played major on-screen roles as such as a Raw General Manager and later on NXT General Manager as well.
Not only Regal has played authority roles on-screen, he has held positions like WWE’s Director of Talent Development and Head of Global Recruiting as well. In 2022, Regal left the Stamford promotion to join AEW but would eventually leave the promotion after a short period of time. Regal is considered a legend in the wrestling industry and is named along with big names like Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Hulk Hogan, the Undertaker, and more
