Matthew Stafford put on a show on Monday Night in Inglewood, compelling Josh Allen to call the Los Angeles Rams quarterback the greatest “thrower” in football. Stafford completed 40 of 54 passes for 383 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Wide receiver Puka Nacua caught 17 of Stafford’s passes for 138 yards and one touchdown. Davante Adams caught 5 passes and scored 2 touchdowns.

After five games into his 18th NFL season, Stafford has thrown 139 completions (64.4%) for 1572 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. In 244 regular-season games, Stafford has thrown for 66,088 yards and 432 touchdowns.

After the final whistle at SoFi Stadium, Allen sang Stafford’s praise. Allen told ESPN’s Laura Rutledge:

If he’s not the greatest thrower of the football of all time, I don’t know who is. He’s a guy that every quarterback should strive to be like.

Is Matthew Stafford the greatest NFL passer/football thrower?

Several great quarterbacks can claim they are the greatest passer/thrower ever. Names that always come up are Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Roger Staubach, Steve Young, Brett Favre, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady.

Besides Marino, all the others have won Super Bowls. Brady has seven rings to his name and is the only quarterback mentioned waiting to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

That said, Brady has admitted that the greatest passer of all time is not Stafford but Aaron Rodgers. Brady on the Stick to Football podcast:

I think there’s no greater passer of the football than Aaron [Rodgers]. There’s certain people, you see everyone do it, and then you see one person throw the ball that much better. Aaron Rodgers was incredible. [It’s] hard to put into words how incredible [Aaron] passes the ball. The way it comes out of his hand, the way it spins and delivers with the pace and the accuracy… There’s only probably [only] three people in the history of the NFL that could do it like him.

Both Stafford and Rodgers have won a Super Bowl. But Rodgers won it with the team he was drafted to, the Green Bay Packers, in 2011. Stafford won it with the Rams in 2021, after the Lions traded him that same year.

Rodgers ranks third in touchdown passes—more than Manning, Favre, Montana, Marino, and Young. His 1.4% interception percentage is the best in league history.

Stafford can overtake Rodgers in the touchdown column if he plays until 43 (Rodgers will be 43 in December).  However, Rodgers is a first-ballot Hall of Famer despite delivering lackluster performances in the last few years. Stafford’s not in the same bracket. Sure, he could be a HOFer someday, but even two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning has been denied entry to Canton twice.

Davante Adams gave his honest opinion about Matthew Stafford

Davante Adams spent the best years of his NFL Career receiving passes from Rodgers in Green Bay. He earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections. Adams even followed Rodgers to New York, a move that did not pan out as they had hoped.

Adams signed with the Rams in 2025. In his debut campaign, he led the league with 14 receiving touchdowns. On the Pat McAfee Show in September, Adams argued that Stafford would be in the GOAT conversation if he had played under Sean McVay since day one. He said:

[Matthew] started in a place like Detroit, where they weren’t winning at the rate that the Rams have been since he has been here since 2021. If his whole career had been here with a guy like Sean, they would be saying, ‘Is this guy literally the best QB that’s ever played?’

Stafford earned one Pro Bowl and a Comeback Player of the Year Award in 12 years with the Lions. In the six years with the Rams, he has earned two Pro Bowl selections, one All-Pro, one league MVP, and a Super Bowl ring.

He came close to winning a second ring last year. The Rams went 12-5 in the regular season. They defeated the Carolina Panthers in the wild card and the Chicago Bears in the divisional playoff game. However, the Seattle Seahawks knocked them out in the NFC Championship Game and eventually won the Super Bowl.
