Brandon Aiyuk isn’t letting up. He wants the move to the Washington Commanders completed so he can play with his former college teammate, Jayden Daniels.

To further his cause, Aiyuk uploaded a video of himself holding a football that had the Commanders logo on it. The video contained a message. Aiyuk wrote:

The best sport in the world, the best league in the world [&] the best team in the world.

In a different video, Aiyuk piled on the pressure on the San Francisco 49ers:

If I’m crazy or if I’m cappin’, tell them boys cut me today, [and] I’ll sign with the Commanders tomorrow. We’ll see who’s cappin.

Shortly after the video went viral, former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho compared Aiyuk’s situation to Antonio Brown’s. Acho said on Speakeasy:

Brandon Aiyuk is on an early Antonio Brown trajectory without the [Antonio Brown] talent… It wasn’t all of a sudden; it was subtle. What ended up as a flood started as a puddle. Antonio Brown did not start on Instagram, crashing out, no. [He] just started running around saying, ‘Free me,’ calling his grandma, cussing out general managers.

Aiyuk acts as if he’s held hostage by the Niners. He signed a four-year $120 million contract, played seven games, entered rehab to nourish his injured ACL, and never reported back. There are still two more years left on his contract, and the Niners have no obligation to let him leave for free.

GM John Lynch has already said that the 28-year-old has played his “last snap” for the team. His desire to play for the Commanders is understandable, but his methods are very polarizing. Acho appealed to his teammates to see if they could persuade him to play football again.

Just because [Aiyuk]’s on that trajectory does not mean he will land there. It just means that’s currently the destination that his airplane is on. Hopefully, we can reroute it and bring it back to normalcy.

Adam Schefter gives his honest take on Brandon Aiyuk’s situation

The 49ers drafted Aiyuk 25th overall in 2020. Following a stellar 2022 campaign with 78 receptions, 1000+ yards, and 8 touchdowns, the 49ers viewed him as the team’s top marksman alongside Deebo Samuel. 2023 turned out to be his breakout season, racking up 1342 yards and 7 TDs on 75 receptions.

Jauan Jennings entered the frame after Aiyuk suffered the ACL tear in week seven in 2024. Jennings and Samuel formed a formidable partnership at the top. In the ensuing year, the Niners traded Deebo to Washington and expected Aiyuk to take his place in the starting lineup. However, he never showed up.

Ever since then, he has been pressuring the franchise to either release or trade him to the Commanders. He has called the Niners “scared” and “stupid” for not listening to his demands. ESPN insider Adam Schefter says Aiyuk is damaging his image by pulling such antics. Schefter said via Coach Yac:

I think every time [Aiyuk] opens his mouth, he damages his standing with other teams, and he scares other teams from bringing him into their organization. In speaking with teams, everybody’s saying, ‘What’s wrong with this guy right now?’ It’s unsettling to watch him, and it’s scary to see how he’s handling himself.

Schefter further added that the Niners could cut Aiyuk during training camp:

What I think happens here, I would imagine when the 49ers get back and reconvene for training camp, right around then I would think they will wind up releasing Brandon Aiyuk.

The Commanders have stated that they have no interest in trading for Aiyuk. But it doesn’t say anywhere that they wouldn’t sign him if he became a free agent.
