“All World Champions exhaust the grey areas”: Fernando Alonso speaks in support of Max Verstappen retaining 2022 world title

Just a few weeks ago, the Formula One world was shook by the news of the FIA’s allegations against Red Bull for exceeding the 2021 budget cap by a few million dollars. The fans could not help speculate the fact that Max Verstappen won his first World Championship in a year in which Red Bull’s car has already been announced illegal by the authoritative committee that governs the rules of F1. Now, many of them has put up the question that Verstappen’s title is at stake since it might be withheld by the FIA.

But 2-time World Champion Fernando Alonso believes Max Verstappen should not have to bear the brunt of Red Bull’s cost cap violation by losing his F1 title. The Spaniard joined Sebastian Vettel to advocate for the Dutchman retaining Championship victory. He went on to claim that Max Verstappen’s brilliant racing in 2021 has shown to the world that he is the rightful title-holder for that season, no matter if his team, Red Bull, went over the budget ceiling.

Fernando Alonso is indeed the man of the hour in F1 town because of his shift to Aston Martin to take Sebastian Vettel’s seat for the next season. In an interview with Motorsport-total.com right before the United States GP weekend, he clarified his stance on whether he believes Max Verstappen should lose his world title due to Red Bull exceeding the 2021 F1 cost cap or not. He said, ”All world champions exhaust the grey areas.

To further strengthen his point, Fernando Alonso also said gave the example of Ferrari in 2019 as many people believe they were in strict violation of some F1 rules that year. But even then, their Grand Prix wins were not cancelled by the FIA. Thus, the 41-year-old believes Max Verstappen should be allowed to keep his title, despite Red Bull having violated the ceiling of expenditure that was set by the FIA for the 2021 season.
