The 2021 F1 championship can be defined as dramatic, controversial and breath-taking where Red Bull’s Max Verstappen went wheel to wheel against the 7 times world champion Mercedes Lewis Hamilton and ended the years of dominance team Mercedes had over the years. Max Verstappen win didn’t lack controversies though as his Abu Dhabi GP win which broke the championship point deadlock was due to a controversial safety car decision from race director Michael Masi.
The reigning world champion Max Verstappen was asked about his rival Lewis Hamilton’s 7 world title wins to which the Dutchman replied that a bit of luck is needed to fight for that or have to be with the dominant team. Max Verstappen went on to say that one always won’t have that kind of luck or may not be in the right era and sometimes wins like it doesn’t happen. Max Verstappen added that he always wanted to win the title and see where you go from there and said everything’s that comes now is a bonus.
“You need a bit of luck to fight for that. You need a very dominant team as well. You don’t always have that luck or you’re not in that era. Sometimes it doesn’t happen,” Max Verstappen said.
“For me, I always wanted to win one and see where you go from there. Everything that comes now is a bonus,” Max Verstappen added.
Christian Horner says Max Verstappen deserved the title
Christian Horner said Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz is very proud of what Max Verstappen and the team achieved. Christian Horner went on to say Max Verstappen had so much bad luck in 2021 but acknowledged that they were bit lucky in Abu Dhabi with safety car. Christian Horner insisted that Max Verstappen deserved the title listing out his 2021 accolades such as leading more than 50 percent of the laps, more than every other driver combined, more pole positions, more race wins.
“Dietrich (Mateschitz) felt Max was very deserving. He was very proud of what he’d done and what the team had achieved,” says Christian Horner.
“There was so much controversy but also so much bad luck that these things tend to balance themselves out,” Christian Horner said.
“Yes, we got a little bit lucky with the safety car at the end of the race, but so much bad luck had gone against us throughout the season. I think Max led more than 50 percent of the laps, more than every other driver combined. He had more pole positions, more race wins, and for me he was totally deserving,” Christian Horner added.
Christian Horner says Toto Wolff is a different kind of animal
Christian Horner acknowledged that the competition he had with Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari boss when his driver was fighting against Fernando Alonso for the world title, they played a gentleman’s game but he added that his now rival Toto Wolff plays it completely different. Christian Horner says that Toto Wolff is a different kind of animal when comes to F1 bosses
“When we fought Fernando Alonso for the world championship, Stefano Domenicali was Ferrari team boss and at that time, the competition was on a – shall we say – gentleman’s level,” said Christian Horner.
“But Toto plays it differently. He’s a different kind of animal,” Christian Horner added.
