In Short
  • Mike Vrabel faces a cheating scandal involving former Athletic reporter Dianna Russini.
  • Drake Maye and other Patriots players express strong support for Vrabel amid the controversy.
  • The Patriots organization is rallying behind Vrabel as he prepares for the upcoming 2026 season.

There is no doubt that Mike Vrabel is going through the worst time of his life after his cheating scandal with former Athletic reporter Dianna Russini came to light.

The New England Patriots head coach had initially tried to laugh off those allegations. But with every passing day, evidence started piling up, eventually forcing him to acknowledge cheating despite being married for 27 years.

On the flip side, Russini quit her job at The Athletic after its parent company, The New York Times, started an investigation into her actions.

But Vrabel stayed on in his job and was even greeted with a standing ovation when he arrived at the organization’s annual season ticket holders’ event.

We’re here for coach, we love coach. What he’s done for us this past year, you can’t speak into words. Thankfully, he is our coach. We know he’s dealing with some stuff off the field,… but we’re here for him, and I know he’s gonna come back.

Drake Maye said

This was the young quarterback’s response when WHDH-TV’s Jonathan Hall asked him about the cheating scandal involving his head coach.

It seems that no matter what, Drake Maye, the New England Patriots’ organization, as well as the fans, are throwing their support behind Mike Vrabel.

At a time when the latter is facing questions about his staying on in his job, the franchise and its personnel are doing everything to support him, so that he does not take a rash decision to quit.

Other Patriots’ players stand behind Mike Vrabel

While Jonathan Hall could get his hands on Drake Maye at the season ticket holders’ event, reporters had to wait to speak with the rest of the Patriots’ players at their media day earlier.

I think everyone’s personal relationship with Coach is their personal relationship with Coach… I love Coach, and I’m gonna be here to support him, as he would be there to support me through anything… I’m trying to do that as best as I can.

Robert Spillane replied

This was the linebacker making a point that he and other players have personal relationships with Mike Vrabel. This cheating scandal involving Dianna Russini is not going to change it.

Robert Spillane acknowledged that the off-field controversy has cast the head coach and the organization in a negative light. But owing to his relationship with Vrabel, he was going to throw his support behind his team leader.

It seems the players are either well-coached by the Patriots’ PR team or they are genuinely speaking about what they believe. Either way, it is helping the three-time Super Bowl winner.

Many have been calling for Mike Vrabel to be fired, as this was a sheer act of unethical relationship with a member of the media. But it does not seem as if the team will act under that pressure.

Mike Vrabel and Patriots to start work towards 2026 season in a week

While Mike Vrabel is trying his best to avoid being in front of the media, it will become harder once the New England Patriots’ training camp starts.

As per the league’s schedule, the franchise will be expecting its rookies to report for workouts from May 8th to 10th. Vrabel will be hopeful to develop those impactful youngsters so that they can reach their potential.

Then, the father of two can stay away from the spotlight for nearly three weeks before OTA Offseason Workouts start. Those sessions will run for nearly a month before players and personnel can go their separate ways.

Even if Mike Vrabel avoids the media during the rookie camp, he may not be able to avoid them completely during the team workouts. Hopefully, he can avoid getting dragged into this mess over and over and concentrate on building towards a 2026 season.
